The brand name equivalent of Spironolactone is called Aldactone. Spironolactone depletes sodium and water from the body to help lower blood pressure and get rid of excess fluid.

Common side effects include diarrhea, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, upset stomach and hair loss.

Potassium can be elevated in the blood by Spironolactone. This can be deadly if left untreated. The risk is higher in people with diabetes, kidney disease, chronic illness and older adults.

Your doctor will monitor you closely.

Other electrolyte problems can also occur. Watch for fluid and electrolyte problems including mood changes, confusion, muscle pain, abnormal heartbeat, dizziness, passing out, seizures, fatigue or stomach upset.

Spironolactone can increase the chance of kidney problems. Signs of kidney problems include inability to pass urine, change in how much urine is passed, blood in the urine or a noticeable weight gain.
