Over 66 million Americans are enrolled in Medicare, and this number will only continue to rise as members of the baby boomer generation continue to join the 65-and-over demographic.1
Medicare Advantage enrollment is also on the rise. In fact, more than 30.8 million Americans — over half of all Medicare-eligible adults — are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.2
A Medicare Advantage plan offers the same coverage as Medicare Part A and Part B, and Medicare Advantage plans can offer benefits that Original Medicare (Parts A and B) doesn't cover.
Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies. Plan availability varies from state to state.
Click on your state on the map or from the list of states to find Medicare Advantage information and resources for your state.
What types of Medicare Advantage plans are available?
Medicare Advantage plans can come in a variety of types:
Private Fee-For-Service (PFFS)
Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)
Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
Medical Savings Accounts (MSA)
Special Needs Plans (SNP)
The available selection of plan types may differ from one county and state to another. The different types of Medicare Advantage plans that are available in your area may include one or more of these plan types.
Medicare HMO
Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans utilize a primary care physician for all initial care and members must seek a referral before seeing a specialist for care. There is no coverage for care received outside of the plan’s network.
Medicare PPO
Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans provide a little more freedom by offering some coverage for out-of-network care and not requiring members to obtain a referral before visiting a specialist.
PPO plans can come in the form of either regional PPOs or local PPOs.
Medicare PFFS
Private Fee-For-Service (PFFS) plans pre-determine how much it will pay health care providers and facilities for care and how much the member will pay.
Medicare Medical Savings Accounts
Medical Savings Accounts (MSAs) combine a high-deductible health plan with a bank account where money is deposited by Medicare in order to pay for health care services and items.
Medicare Special Needs Plans
Special Needs Plans (SNPs) are custom-designed for people with specific diseases and health conditions.
