While you may not be able to find Medicare plans that cover Dyrenium (Triamterene), Medicare Advantage plans in your area may cover other prescription diuretic drugs. Learn more and compare plans in your area.
Dyrenium
Chemical name: Triamterene
Brand name: Dyrenium
Typical dosage: 50mg
Typical type: Capsule1
Dyrenium is a medication used to treat swelling (or edema). Dyrenium is available as a brand name drug or as a generic and comes as an oral capsule.
Dyrenium is a medication that contains the active ingredient Triamterene. Dyrenium is used to treat edema (swelling) associated with congestive heart failure (CHF), cirrhosis of the liver, steroid use or unidentified causes.
Dyrenium works by preventing your body from reabsorbing sodium. This helps your body get rid of fluid. It is typically taken twice daily.
Common side effects of Dyrenium include dizziness, diarrhea, headache, upset stomach, fatigue and dry mouth.
Does Medicare cover Dyrenium?
According to GoodRx, Medicare Part D plans didn't typically cover Dyrenium in 2023.1
When certain drugs that are injectable or otherwise administered by a health care professional are covered by Medicare Part B, those drugs aren't covered by Part D plans and you'll get Dyrenium coverage from your Part B benefits.
Medicare Advantage plans or Part D plans include copay amounts that can range widely from one plan to another. Plan members may also be responsible for meeting a deductible before the plan’s drug coverage kicks in.
Medicare Advantage plans that offer prescription drug coverage are called Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plans (MA-PD). 89% of 2023 Medicare Advantage plans included prescription drug coverage.2
Medicare prescription drugs plans each have their own formulary, or drug list, that details what prescription drugs are covered by the plan and how they are covered.
Drug coverage may vary based on plan availability. You may be able to find Medicare Advantage plan options in your area that cover prescription drugs. We represent carriers such as Humana, Aetna, UHC, Anthem BCBS, Wellcare, Cigna Healthcare, and Kaiser Permanente.

Additional information
Unless your doctor instructs you otherwise, take your doses of Dyrenium after meals.
If you take it once daily, take it in the morning. Dyrenium will likely cause you to pass urine more often. Try to take it several hours before bedtime in order to avoid problems sleeping.
Dyrenium can increase the level of potassium that is in your blood. This can cause serious problems if it is not treated. The risk of elevated potassium levels is highest in people with diabetes, kidney problems, severe illnesses and those who are older.
Dyrenium can lead to kidney and liver problems when used for long periods of time. Symptoms of these problems can include problems or changes in urination, fatigue, upset stomach or yellow skin and eyes.
Because your body is getting rid of more water while taking Dyrenium, you could experience problems with your electrolytes.
Watch for signs of mood changes, confusion, abnormal heartbeat, dizziness, seizures, fatigue or the inability to pass urine. Talk to the doctor right away if you experience any of these side effects.

Coverage and costs of prescription medications will vary by Medicare plan. Not all plans are available in all areas.
